The lap sealant can certainly help you in sealing any kind of surface. The only bit of problem is that not always it is right apply the lap sealant in copious amounts. Many a times, a small quantity of lap sealant is more than enough as well.
This brings us to a very important question, how much lap sealant do I need?
We will today answer this question in great detail and also help you understand the factors on which the same depends.
How much lap sealant do I need?
Ideally, you should apply a lap sealant which is 0.25 inches wide or 3/8 inches wide to cover a small gap. However, the exact lap sealant which you use depends on a handful of factors which we will highlight below.
Factors on which quantity of lap sealant depends:
The factors on which the quantity of the lap sealant depends include:
- Covering cracks and seams:
If you just plan to cover the seams or the cracks, the quantity which we have highlighted above is proper.
In case, the crack is bigger than that, you shouldn’t use a lap sealant but rather another sealing agent which is suitable for the bigger cracks.
If the seam is thinner than that or the crack is thinner than that, then there is no point in applying the lap sealant in greater weight than that. You will just be wasting the lap sealant in that case.
- Sealing Flange edges of appliances:
When you’re using the sealant, another application is to seal the flange edges of the appliances. Doing so will ensure that the life span of the appliance increases further. Not only that, it will protect the appliances from the elements of weather as well.
Once again, the amount of quantity which you need is pretty limited. You can certainly stick to the quantity which we have highlighted above to seal the flange edges of the appliances.
The disadvantage of using more quantity is that the lap sealant might percolate inside the casing of the appliance. In that case, it might interfere with the working of the appliance. Of course, the chances of this happening are pretty limited since the lap sealant can dry pretty quick but the chances are always there. If the lap sealant percolates inside the casing, you might have to remove it for the appliance to work properly again. That is why; it is a good idea to always stick to the quantity which we have highlighted above.
- Leveling needed:
If you’re not very particular regarding the leveling of the lap sealant, applying it in small quantity is always a good idea. However, doing so will not always guarantee you proper leveling. In case, the leveling is not proper, you might have to apply the higher quantity than what is mentioned above. This is likely the only exception in which you can apply the lap sealant in copious amounts.
As you can see, in most cases, the amount of lap sealant which you need to apply is pretty limited. That is why; single tube of lap sealant is more than enough for various applications. Only when you aren’t able to achieve proper leveling, you can think about applying higher quantity of lap sealant.
